Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park - NZ
Named for New Zealand's tallest peak, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is one of four parks to make up the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site. The park includes 19 of the 20 peaks in New Zealand that are over 3000m tall.
While much of the park is famous for its rugged peaks it also hosts eight of New Zealand's twelve largest glaciers. Surrounding Aoraki / Mount Cook and easily accessible from Mount Cook village are the Tasman, Hooker and Mueller glaciers.
The national park is host to around 40 bird species including the kea, a large New Zealand native bird and the only alpine parrot in the world. The kea has survived through it's natural inquisitiveness and omnivorous diet. Intelligence test have shown the birds to have strong conditional problem solving skills. In some tests wild kea have shown the ability to think through logic problems at a level similar to primates, making them quite possibly one of the most intelligent birds in the world.
